If you are unfamiliar with the Mexican papier-mache folk art commonly known as alebrijes and why you will be seeing them everywhere this year (hint: it has to do with a best-selling Disney film), check out my former post here.
In this post I want to highlight some of the BEST Alebrije resources for your Spanish, History, Art, or Elementary classroom and how to use them.
#1 Use alebrijes to decorate your bulletin boards during the month of October (the month leading up to Dia de los Muertos–the Mexican celebration of life and remembrance of the dead).
This inexpensive bulletin board features hand-drawn alebrijes, digitally enhanced with bright colors.
The set includes three different alebrijes. Each one is available to print facing right or left. And each alebrije comes in four different sizes.
Just print, cut, laminate, and display in your classroom! You can download this set on Teachers Pay Teachers for $2.25.
You can also find this beautiful resource by El Mundo de Pepita on Teachers Pay Teachers.
It features eight different alebrijes available to print on full 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Each alebrije is surrounded by a beautiful page border.
This set also includes 4 marigold flowers. Download this bulletin board set for just $3.50.
#2 Create your own alebrijes with these easy-to-follow resources created by teachers.
A perfect activity for an elementary art class, this next resource gives you instructions to create your own alebrijes.
This resource, created by MiniMatisse, includes videos and student examples.
You can download a copy for $12 on Teachers Pay Teachers.
This 31-page resource from Profe Pistole (me) is intended for middle school through high school students.
Students create their own unique alebrije by rolling dice and drawing the corresponding body part found on the game board. This fun, interactive activity is perfect for using during Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) or closer to DÍa de los Muertos (November 1 & 2).
Especially relevant in the Spanish classroom, this activity contains matching vocabulary worksheets for students and answer keys for the teacher.
There is also an optional game board that utilizes phrases in Spanish “cabeza de toro” instead of pictures. Great resource for only $4.75. Download your copy here. Be sure to share pictures of your students’ finished projects with the hashtag #AlebrijesProfePistole so I can feature them in an upcoming blog post!
#3 Also perfect for the Spanish classroom are short readings in Spanish about the history of Los Alebrijes!
“This is not your ordinary color by number! Students read a paragraph about the history of los alebrijes and then must answer True and False questions regarding what they read. True is one color and False is another. They must answer correctly in order to color the picture correctly!”
Comprehensible input + fun, kinesthetic output! Download this resource from Spanish Resource Shop for $3.50.
